CHAPTER TWELVE
After a bit more conversation, Anne was reminded of the scrumptious pastries on display in the French Bistro and put forward the idea to Miranda that they should meet there. As the patio was filled with guests, they took a seat inside. The restaurant seemed to be a success, judging from its full capacity. As a tall and thin woman dressed in navy blue slacks and wearing a freshly pressed white shirt came over to take their drink order, they looked over the menu. When she got back with their lattes, Anne decided to have a Pain au Chocolat while Marcia chose a delicious sounding Almond Croissant.
Anne noted the woman with a no-nonsense pixie haircut that framed her pretty face. Large blue eyes were the perfect compliment to her light skin, now brushed with a hint of sunburn, so often seen when people forgot about Coloradoâs high altitude and the sunâs rays. She wore the typical Colorado uniform of trail pants with lots of pockets, a rose top with cutouts for thumb holes, and a pair of name-brand trail runners. Her outfit was completed with a much-loved canvas messenger bag. Anne immediately liked her.
Marcia took a sip of the latte and sighed. âThis is delightful. I hadnât been in yet, so thanks for suggesting we meet here.â
âMy pleasure. And thanks for meeting with me. Howâd your talk go?â Anne held the unusual cup, which had two handles, and took a drink of the latte.
âGreat. Turns out that subject brought in a lot of curious people. The place was packed. Thanks for asking. Hopefully, it will help people to learn more about mushrooms and they wonât get such a bad rap.â
Anne nodded. âI think my favorite are portobellos. But I have to admit, I donât know much about mushrooms either. Basically, I stick with oyster or baby bellas if I buy any from the store.â She steered the conversation back to her intent for their meeting. âIt sounded like you were really surprised about Laurel.â
Marcia set her cup in the saucer before scooting her chair closer to the table. âYes, well, first let me say that I didnât know her well. In fact, itâs only been probably a month since she joined the club. The fact is, you may have people join to attend one meeting and then you never see or hear from them again. She had been to a meeting and was scheduled to join our upcoming foraging outing, but she had shared that she wanted to learn because she didnât want to make the mistake of picking the wrong ones. Thatâs why when you said they believe that caused her death, I couldnât believe it.â
Had Anne said that? She tried to remember but thought that sheâd only said Laurel had possibly died from the mushrooms. However, it probably stood to reason that she would have had to get that information from someone. Anne remembered that sheâd taken a picture of the mushroom in the basket theyâd found at Laurelâs.
